Many common approaches to developing math fact fluency—including timed tests, speed drills, rote memorization, and isolated fact practice—may actually hinder students' mathematical development rather than support it. In this Lunch & Learn session, participants will explore the eight unproductive practices identified by researchers Gina Kling and Jennifer Bay-Williams and examine evidence-based alternatives that promote reasoning, flexibility, accuracy, and long-term retention. Attendees will leave with practical strategies, games, assessment approaches, and instructional routines that help students develop fact fluency through understanding rather than memorization alone.
