Fractions can be one of the most challenging concepts for students to master and one

of the most rewarding to teach well.

Join us for a full-day, in-person professional learning experience on November 9

built around the Teaching Fractions Toolkit, a free resource developed by the Institute

of Education Sciences (IES) and Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest to

support high-quality fractions instruction. The toolkit was created to help teachers

strengthen students' understanding of fractions, fraction operations, ratios, and

proportional reasoning through engaging, evidence-based teaching practice. 

 During this interactive session, we'll explore Modules 1 and 2 of the toolkit together

through rich mathematical tasks, collaborative discussions, reflection, and classroom-

focused application. You'll have the opportunity to:

· Strengthen your own understanding of key fraction concepts

· Explore instructional strategies that promote deep conceptual understanding

· Analyze student thinking and common misconceptions

· Engage with classroom-ready activities and resources

· Collaborate with fellow educators and share ideas for practice

This is more than a workshop. It's an opportunity to experience mathematics as a

learner, examine how students develop fraction understanding, and leave with practical

tools you can use immediately in your classroom. The toolkit was developed with

educator input and includes resources such as lesson-planning supports, formative

assessment tools, teacher reflection activities, and instructional tasks designed to

improve student learning.

Following the in-person session, participants will continue their learning of Modules 3-6 through 4 weekly one-hour interactive virtual sessions, which focus on fraction

multiplication and division, rate, ratio, and proportional reasoning and their

implementation in classroom instruction.
