Join colleagues for a three-session book study of Leveled Reading, Leveled Lives by Timothy Shanahan. In this thought-provoking book, Shanahan examines the history, research, and unintended consequences of leveled reading systems, challenging educators to reconsider long-held assumptions about how students develop as readers. Participants will engage in collaborative discussion, explore the research base surrounding text complexity and reading achievement, and reflect on implications for classroom instruction, intervention, and curriculum decisions.
Throughout the series, educators will examine key questions such as: What does the research say about matching students to texts? How can teachers provide appropriate support while maintaining access to grade-level content? What instructional practices best promote reading growth for all learners? Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of current literacy research and practical insights for strengthening reading instruction in their classrooms and schools. This series is appropriate for classroom teachers, intervention specialists, literacy coaches, administrators, and curriculum leaders committed to evidence-based literacy practices.
